1.  The Big House

No list of things to do near UMich would be complete without Michigan Stadium, better known as The Big House. 

As one of the most iconic college football stadiums in the country, The Big House is where Michigan game days come to life. Students pack the student section, tailgates fill the surrounding neighborhoods and the energy across Ann Arbor is hard to miss. 

Even if you’re not a huge football fan, going to at least one Michigan football game is a major part of the student experience.  

2. Nichols Arboretum

Known by students as “The Arb,” Nichols Arboretum is one of the best outdoor escapes near the University of Michigan. 

Students come here to walk, run, picnic, study outside or just get a break from campus. It’s especially popular in the spring when the peony garden is in bloom, but it’s a great place to visit throughout the year. 

If you want fresh air without leaving Ann Arbor, The Arb is one of the easiest places to go. 

3. Main Street Ann Arbor

Main Street Ann Arbor is one of the most popular areas for restaurants, shopping and weekend plans near campus. 

You’ll find local restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, bars and entertainment options, making it a go-to spot when you want to get off campus without going far. Students often head here for dinners with friends, birthday celebrations, parents’ weekend meals or a casual Saturday afternoon. 

It has a slightly different feel from the central student areas near campus, which makes it a great place to explore when you want a change of scenery. 

4. Michigan Theater

The Michigan Theater is a historic Ann Arbor venue that hosts movies, concerts, comedy shows and special events throughout the year. 

Students visit for classic film screenings, independent movies, live performances and community events. If you’re looking for something to do that feels different from a typical night out, Michigan Theater is a great option close to campus. 

5. Pinball Pete’s

Pinball Pete’s is a longtime student favorite that was recently moved to Downtown Ann Arbor. 

Inside, you’ll find arcade games, pinball machines, racing games and classic games that make it an easy spot for a casual hangout. Whether you’re taking a study break, looking for something low-key to do with friends or planning a quick weekend activity, Pinball Pete’s is one of the most entertaining spots near UMich. 

6. Kerrytown Market & Shops

Kerrytown Market & Shops is a local Ann Arbor favorite with restaurants, specialty shops, markets and weekend activities. 

Students often visit for the Ann Arbor Farmers Market, local food spots, coffee, gifts and brunch. Compared to the busier student areas near campus, Kerrytown feels a little quieter and more local, which makes it a fun place to explore when you want to see more of Ann Arbor. 

7. UMMA

The University of Michigan Museum of Art, also known as UMMA, is located right on Central Campus and gives students easy access to art, exhibitions and events. 

The museum features artwork from around the world and regularly hosts student programming, lectures and special exhibitions. Because it’s located on campus, UMMA is an easy place to visit between classes, on a quiet afternoon or when you want a free activity close by. 

8. Yost Ice Arena

Yost Ice Arena is home to Michigan Hockey and one of the most electric game-day atmospheres on campus. 

Known for its passionate student section and longstanding traditions, Yost offers a unique college sports experience that many students consider a must-do during their time at Michigan. Whether you’re a dedicated hockey fan or attending your first game, the energy inside the arena makes it easy to get caught up in the excitement. 

Beyond Wolverine hockey, Yost also hosts public skating sessions throughout the year. Students can lace up their skates and enjoy the same ice where Michigan Hockey plays, making it a fun activity for friend groups, sorority sisterhood events or a break from the usual weekend routine. 

With both game days and public skate opportunities, Yost Ice Arena is one of the most popular recreation and entertainment destinations near the University of Michigan. 

9. Ann Arbor Farmers Market

Located in Kerrytown, the Ann Arbor Farmers Market has been a local tradition for more than 100 years and remains one of the most popular weekend activities in the city. 

Open year-round, the market features local produce, baked goods, flowers, coffee and products from Michigan vendors. Students often visit on Saturday mornings to grab breakfast, explore local businesses and spend time outdoors before heading back to campus. 

If you’re looking for a way to experience more of Ann Arbor beyond the University of Michigan campus, the Farmers Market is a great place to start. It offers a mix of local food, community events and small businesses that give the city its unique character. 

10. South University

South University, often called “South U” by students, is one of the most popular areas near the University of Michigan for dining, nightlife and socializing. 

Located just steps from Central Campus, South U is packed with restaurants, coffee shops, late-night food spots and student hangouts. It’s also home to several popular bars, like Good Time Charley’s and Brown Jug, making it a common destination for students looking to meet up with friends after class or on the weekends.
