Trying to understand how meal plans at the University of Michigan actually work? Wondering if you really need one or which option makes the most sense for your routine?

You’re not alone. UMich meal plans can feel confusing at first. Between unlimited dining hall access, block plans, Dining Dollars and Blue Bucks, it’s not always obvious what you’re paying for or how often you’ll actually use it.

In this guide, we’ll break down your options, so you can decide what fits your lifestyle best.

Unlimited Meal Plan

Unlimited meal plans are the standard option for students living on campus.

They allow you to enter dining halls as often as you want during operating hours using your student ID. Meals are served in an all-you-care-to-eat format, so you’re not tracking individual meals. These plans also include a small amount of Dining Dollars for added flexibility.

While convenient, unlimited plans still depend on dining hall hours and locations, so they work best if you plan to eat most of your meals on campus.

Block Meal Plans

Block meal plans are designed for flexibility, especially for students living off-campus.

Instead of unlimited access, you get a set number of meals per semester, such as 55, 80 or 125, along with a Dining Dollar balance.

This option works well if you:

  • Cook some of your meals
  • Eat off-campus regularly
  • Have a less predictable schedule

Block plans give you access to dining halls without requiring a full commitment.

Dining Dollars

Dining Dollars are included with most meal plans and act as a prepaid balance tied to your student account.

They can be used at cafés, markets and quick-service locations across campus for things like coffee, snacks or meals between classes.

Dining Dollars are meant to supplement dining hall meals and add convenience throughout the day.

Blue Bucks

Blue Bucks are separate from meal plans and offer more flexibility.

You can purchase Blue Bucks at any time and use them at many of the same on-campus dining locations as Dining Dollars. The key difference is that Blue Bucks aren’t tied to a meal plan, which makes them a convenient option for students who want occasional access to campus dining without committing to a full plan.

For many off-campus students, Blue Bucks are the easiest way to stay connected to campus food options while maintaining independence in their day-to-day routine.

Meal Plans for On-Campus Students

If you live in a residence hall, you are required to have a meal plan.

At the University of Michigan, this primarily applies to freshmen. Nearly all first-year students live on campus, so for most incoming students, meal plans are simply part of the experience.

These plans are typically unlimited, giving you consistent access to dining halls throughout the day. This setup makes daily life easier. You don’t have to worry about cooking, grocery shopping or planning meals around your schedule.

At the same time, it does mean relying on dining hall options and hours, which may not always match your routine.

Meal Plans for Off-Campus Students

If you live off-campus, meal plans are optional. This gives you the flexibility to choose what works best for your lifestyle. Some students choose block meal plans for occasional dining hall access, while others rely on Blue Bucks or skip meal plans entirely.

Living off-campus allows for more variety, whether that’s cooking at home, eating out in Ann Arbor or using campus dining when it’s convenient.

Meal Plan Breakdown

Meal plan pricing at the University of Michigan varies based on how many meals you want and how often you plan to eat on campus.

For off-campus and apartment residents, here’s a simplified breakdown of Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 meal plan pricing:

Plan TypeMeals Per Semester Dining Dollars Price (Per Semester)
55 Block55 meals$50$764
80 Block80 meals$300$1,239
125 Block125 meals$250$1,564
Unlimited PlanUnlimited$25$3,056
Pricing reflects the 2025-2026 academic year and is subject to change.

The biggest difference comes down to how often you’ll realistically eat in dining halls. Many off-campus students find that smaller block plans, or even just using Blue Bucks, offer better value without overcommitting.
