Trying to find a workout spot near the University of Michigan can be harder than it sounds.
You might want a gym close to your dorm, a yoga class near South U, a place to lift after class or an outdoor route where you can clear your head without needing a car. And if you’re balancing classes, studying, clubs and a social life, convenience matters just as much as the workout itself.
The good news: Ann Arbor has a lot of fitness options for students, from campus recreation centers to boutique studios, climbing gyms and outdoor trails.
In this article, we’ll walk through some of the best places to work out near the University of Michigan, grouped by the type of workout you’re looking for:
Best Campus Gyms
1. Intramural Sports Building

Location: 606 E. Hoover Avenue
The Intramural Sports Building, often called the IM, is one of the most convenient workout options for University of Michigan students, especially if you spend a lot of time near Central Campus, South Campus or the athletic campus.
This is a strong option if you want:
- Strength training equipment
- Cardio machines
- Basketball or court space
- A traditional gym environment
- A workout you can fit between classes
2. Palmer Field Temporary Facility

Location: 105 Washtenaw Avenue
Referred to as The Bubble, The Palmer Field Temporary Facility is a convenient option if you live or study near Central Campus. This temporary facility houses the fitness equipment you need for a no-fuss workout while the new Hadley Family Recreation and Well-Being Center is under construction. Anticipated to open this Spring, the Hadley Recreation Center is also projected to be a popular workout spot on campus after its renovations.
The Bubble is useful when you want a straightforward workout without needing to travel far. It may not have the same feeling as a large commercial gym, but for students who prioritize location, it can be one of the easiest choices.
3. North Campus Recreation Building

Location: 2375 Hubbard Road
If you live on North Campus or spend most of your day there, the North Campus Recreation Building is likely your most convenient option.
The NCRB’s location makes it especially useful for engineering, art, architecture, music and other students who don’t want to commute to Central Campus just to work out.
