So, you’re trying to figure out how to find a college roommate, but you’re not sure where to start or what platforms Michigan students actually use.

As a student at the University of Michigan, I’ve gone through the roommate search myself and watched countless friends do the same. I understand the platforms students actually use, the questions that matter and the common red flags that come up in real roommate situations.

In this guide, you’ll learn how to define what you want in a roommate, where Michigan students usually look, how to reach out to potential roommates and the questions that help you figure out whether someone is actually a good fit before you sign a lease.

Determine Your “Must-Haves”

Before starting to message people or post in groups, figure out what you actually want and need in a living situation. This makes the search way easier and helps you filter out people who won’t be a match.

Ask yourself:

  • What is your monthly budget on a living space?
  • How many roommates do you want?
  • Do you want your space to be a social or quieter atmosphere?
  • Where do you want to live? Close to campus or a little further from it?
  • What is your schedule looking like?
  • What cleanliness level is ideal?

You don’t need to have an answer for all of these questions, but knowing “musts” vs. “nice-to-haves” makes it way easier to find a college roommate who fits your lifestyle needs.

Start With Your Friends

If you don’t know where to start, your friends and college network are a good place to start. These people already have shared interests, so you have a higher chance at being compatible for living arrangements.

If your friends already have a roommate, still ask as they might know someone who is still looking. Michigan’s campus is full of many overlapping social circles, from Greek life to clubs to classes to hometown friends, there are so many ways to naturally connect with people who share similar interests and routines.

Don’t be afraid to ask around either! Simply saying “Hey, do you know anyone who is looking for a roommate?” could take you a long way at Michigan.

Mutual connections can help you to find someone who fits what you are looking for in a roommate.

Check the Platforms Students Use

Michigan students use a handful of specific platforms every year to find roommates. These are usually the fastest and most effective ways to meet people who are actively searching.

Here are the most common places to look:

Instagram

A lot of Michigan students post on University of Michigan Instagram pages in order to reach other students. You can also browse posts on class pages or respond to people who share details similar to your routine.

I found my own freshman year using Instagram by posting on one of these class pages and then DMing back and forth about our interests and living habits.

Facebook Groups

These groups are super active during housing season, with people posting roommate bios, subleases and apartment openings.

Look for:

  • UMich Housing, Subleases, & Roommates
  • University of Michigan Housing Groups
  • Ann Arbor Student Housing & Roommates

Most people share a short introduction, photos, lifestyle details and what they’re looking for in a roommate, making it easy to start a conversation.

GroupMe Housing Chats

There are GroupMes for every class year, club and housing group. These chats move fast, but they’re great for meeting people who need a roommate ASAP.

Roommate Matching Services

Some student apartments, including Rambler, offer roommate matching when you apply. You’ll fill out a quick questionnaire about your habits, preferences and daily routine and the team pairs you with someone who fits your responses.

It’s a good option if you’re stressed about finding someone on your own or want help narrowing down compatible roommates.

Make Sure It’s a Good Fit

Once you start talking to potential roommates, the next step is figuring out if you’re actually compatible. Living with someone is different than being friends, you want someone who your daily routines blend well with.

Here are a few questions to ask:

  • What’s your typical sleep schedule?
  • How often do you like to clean?
  • How social are you? How many times a week do you go out?
  • Do you prefer having people over or keeping things quiet?
  • What’s your class and study routine like?
  • How do you feel about sharing items and groceries?

Make sure to pay attention to how open someone is when answering these questions. Being clear, honest and upfront is key for finding a good roommate.

When everything feels like it lines up, budget, lifestyle, cleanliness, expectations, you’re on the right track.

Finding a college roommate at Michigan doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you know what you’re looking for, where to search and the questions that matter, the process becomes way less stressful.

You don’t need a perfect match, you just need someone whose lifestyle works well with yours! For more guidance on your roommate search, feel free to contact our leasing team at Rambler.
