Parking near the University of Michigan is limited, competitive and often expensive, especially around Central Campus and South U. Most UMich students who bring a car rely on one of four options: university parking permits, public garages, street parking or paid parking through their apartment or house. The best option depends on where you live, how often you plan to drive and whether you need a guaranteed spot.
Whether you’re living on campus or off campus, parking in Ann Arbor is one of the most confusing parts of student life. Options are limited, pricing varies and the closer you are to central campus, the harder it becomes to find a reliable spot.
At Rambler Ann Arbor, we help students understand how their day-to-day life will actually work before they sign a lease, including what to expect if they’re planning to bring a car.
In this guide, you’ll learn the most common parking options for UMich students, how much they typically cost and what to plan for when deciding whether having a car in Ann Arbor makes sense for you.
On-Campus Parking in Ann Arbor

For many students, this is the first place to look. It feels straightforward. Get a permit, park on campus and you’re set.
In reality, however, on-campus parking is more limited than most students expect.
University Parking Permits

The University of Michigan manages parking through a permit system, and most student permits are assigned to specific lots or areas rather than general campus access.
Availability depends on eligibility, and not all students qualify for permits in central locations. Juniors, seniors and graduate students who need to commute to and from campus are eligible for university parking permits. Many student permits are a lot farther from central campus, which means you may need to walk or use campus transit to reach your classes.
Permits also come with rules around when and where you can park, so flexibility is limited compared to what most students expect.
This option works best for students who want a guaranteed space and are comfortable with a longer walk or commute to campus buildings.
If you want to explore current permit options, requirements, more detailed maps and availability, it’s worth reviewing the University’s parking site for the most up-to-date information.
Parking Enforcement and Restrictions
Parking rules are actively enforced across campus, including permit-only lots, time-restricted spaces and service areas. Enforcement runs year-round and violations can result in tickets or towing.
Electric Vehicle and Accessible Parking
UMich also offers electric vehicle charging stations and accessible parking across campus. These spaces require proper permits or authorization and are limited compared to standard parking.
Campus Garages and Structures
There are also parking structures available across campus, typically used by faculty, staff and permitted users.
For students, access is more limited and often more competitive. Availability can vary throughout the day, especially during peak class hours.
While garages provide more structure than surface lots, they do not always solve the convenience issue most students are looking for.
Off-Campus Parking in Ann Arbor

If you are living off campus or bringing a car without relying on university permits, your options expand, but so do the variables you have to consider.
Street Parking
Street parking is one of the most common options near central campus and South U.
Meters are enforced regularly and most areas have time limits. Residential streets may require permits, which restrict long-term parking for non-residents.
While this option can work for short periods, it becomes difficult to rely on daily. Many students end up moving their car frequently or planning their schedule around parking restrictions.
It is important to note that the fine for a City of Ann Arbor expired meter parking citation is $15 if paid by the end of the next business day, $25 if paid within 14 days, $60 if paid after 14 days and $70 after 30 days.
Public Parking Garages
Ann Arbor has several public garages located within walking distance of campus and throughout downtown.
The Forest Avenue Parking Garage and the Park Rite S8-Hills Street Structure are the most popular parking garages to the Diag for students who have classes there because they are only an 8-minute and 11-minute walk. There are also other options like the Maynard Structure and the Republic Garage Parking which are a 6-minute and 8-minute walk from the Diag, but they do get busy especially around admission season at UMich.
Garages offer a more consistent experience than street parking, which is why many students use them when they want to avoid searching for a spot.
However, the tradeoff is cost. Hourly rates can add up quickly and monthly passes are limited. In Ann Arbor, the average hourly cost is around $1.65 to $2.50 and monthly passes usually run for around $150 to $245. You will also need to factor in the distance between the garage and your housing or classes.
Houses and Greek Life Parking

Some UMich students live in houses, whether that’s a regular rental with friends or a fraternity or sorority house.
At first, this can seem like a built-in parking solution. Some houses do have driveways or small lots and certain Greek houses offer limited designated spaces for members.
However, parking is usually very limited compared to the number of people living in the house.
In many cases, only a few spots are available and they may be assigned based on seniority or house rules. Street parking is often used to fill the gap, but that comes with the same restrictions and time limits found throughout Ann Arbor.
Parking at Student Apartments

Many off-campus apartments offer parking, but it is usually separate from rent and not guaranteed.
In Ann Arbor, parking typically ranges from about $150 to $350 per month, depending on location and whether the space is covered or in a garage.
Properties closer to central campus tend to have more limited parking due to space constraints and demand.
For students planning to bring a car and living in student apartments, reserving a space early is important.

Game Day Parking in Ann Arbor

Football Saturdays at Michigan completely change how parking works across Ann Arbor.
The University designates specific parking areas for game day use, many of which require pre-purchased permits or are reserved for event parking. Regular campus parking rules and access often shift on game days, especially near the Big House and surrounding areas.
Streets that are usually available fill early, garages reach capacity faster and pricing often increases for event parking. Many homeowners and private lots also open up paid parking spaces on game days, which can be convenient but are typically priced higher than usual.
On game days, students typically walk to the stadium in large groups from across campus coming from tailgates. Streets leading toward the Big House become crowded with foot traffic, to the point where cars move slowly. In the closest streets, roads are often closed or heavily restricted to handle the volume of people walking through.
If you plan to have a car on campus during football season, it is important to plan ahead. Game day parking often requires advance planning, and you may need to move your car earlier than usual, arrive well in advance or park farther from your destination.

Parking in Ann Arbor is limited, especially the closer you get to central campus.
There isn’t one perfect option, only what fits how you plan to live. If you rely on your car daily, parking needs to be part of your decision from the start. If you want to stay close to campus and walk to class, you may not need a car at all.
Most students realize this after they move in, but it’s better to start the decision process now.
In Ann Arbor, where you live determines whether parking is part of your routine or something you rarely think about.
