If your plans change after signing a lease at Rambler Ann Arbor, you may be able to relet your apartment by finding another qualified person to take over your lease. Reletting means a new resident signs a lease for your space, helping you avoid being responsible for the full remaining lease term once the process is complete.
At Rambler Ann Arbor, we’ve helped hundreds of residents navigate the reletting process, and while it does involve a few required steps, it’s usually less overwhelming when you know what to expect.
In this guide, you’ll learn how reletting works at Rambler Ann Arbor, including the step-by-step process, what you’re responsible for, what your reletter needs to do and which fees both of you should plan for.
1. Find a Reletter

Rambler Ann Arbor residents who wish to relet are responsible for finding someone to take over their spot in the unit.
Finding a reletter can be a lot like finding a roommate. To find someone reliable who can meet their obligations and get along well with your roommates, consider reaching out to people you already know. Consider friends, classmates, UMich group chats or fellow club members.
If your personal network doesn’t yield results, consider posting in University of Michigan housing forums or local Facebook groups dedicated to Ann Arbor rentals. Many UMich students look for summer housing in Ann Arbor for classes, research or internships, so starting your search early can help you connect with those in need of a place at Rambler.

2. Notify Management
If someone wants to take over your spot at Rambler Ann Arbor, they’ll need to go through the normal leasing process, which means submitting an application and signing their own lease.
To kick things off, just email the leasing team and CC the person who wants your apartment. That way, they can reply and confirm they’re taking over your unit. Including them from the start helps avoid confusion and makes sure the right monthly rent shows up on their lease.

3. Reletter Application and Lease
Your reletter will need to complete the Rambler Ann Arbor application, which typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. They should be prepared to provide basic information, including:
- Driver’s License
- Emergency Contact
- Pet Information (if interested in bringing a pet)
- Current Residence
As part of the application process, your reletter will need to pass both a background check and a credit screening.
When it’s time to sign the lease, the reletter must also provide a valid guarantor or meet the qualifications to act as a self-guarantor. They’ll also need to opt-in or provide proof of renter’s insurance.

The reletter will have to pay an administrative fee, application fee and security deposit. Visit our FAQ page to learn more about the current cost of all fees.
If the reletter fails to complete any of the steps above, they will be unable to relet your apartment at Rambler Ann Arbor.
Applications are usually processed within three to five business days, but we recommend starting the process as early as possible to avoid delays.
4. Pay your Reletting/Administrative Fees
Once your reletter has completed their application and screening, you’ll be responsible for a $350 administrative fee.
If you prefer that we find a reletter for you, there’s a reletting fee equal to 85% of one month’s rent. For instance, if your monthly rent is $1,469, the reletting fee would be $1,248.65. This fee covers advertising your unit, administrative costs and any additional expenses involved in securing a reletter.
All balances, including applicable fees, must be fully paid before we can send you a relet agreement.
Our leasing team will guide you through every step, ensuring a smooth and straightforward process.
5. Relet Agreement

After completing the steps above, both you and your reletter must sign a relet agreement, which will outline the specific terms of the relet.
If either party fails to complete the relet agreement, it will not be approved, and you’ll remain responsible for the full lease term.
6. Finalize the Details
At the start of the relet period, once your reletter is approved, return all keys or access devices to our leasing staff. The staff will then issue new keys and devices to your reletter.
If any keys or devices aren’t returned, a fee will apply: $100 for a key fob replacement, $100 for a parking sticker and $25 for a bedroom or mailbox key.
Once you’ve completed all the steps, you’ll be fully released from the obligations of your lease, which will then be transferred to your reletter.
At Rambler Ann Arbor, we know that your plans can change before your lease ends. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find a reletter and transfer your responsibilities so that you can move as you please, as stress-free as possible.
