On-Campus Housing at the University of Michigan
For most students, living on campus is part of the freshman experience at Michigan. While it is not required, the majority of first-year students live in residence halls during their first year before moving into off-campus Ann Arbor student housing.
Where you live on campus can shape your daily routine pretty quickly. Some dorms place you right in the middle of Central Campus, while others create a much quieter and more residential experience.
Central Campus Dorms
Central Campus dorms are where many freshmen hope to live because they put you close to classes, dining halls and student life. Residence halls like South Quad, West Quad, East Quad and Markley Hall are all within walking distance of the Diag and many academic buildings.
Living in Central Campus housing also means you are close to football Saturdays, South University restaurants and late-night study spots. For many students, this area feels like the center of the Michigan experience.
Most residence halls include community spaces, study lounges, laundry facilities and meal plan access through Michigan Dining. These dorms are designed to help students adjust to college life and meet people quickly during freshman year.
However, after their first year, many students begin looking into Ann Arbor student housing off campus for more independence, privacy and updated amenities.
North Campus Housing
North Campus housing creates a very different experience from Central Campus. This area is home primarily to engineering, art and architecture students because many of those academic buildings are located farther from the center of campus.
Compared to Central Campus, North Campus feels much quieter and more residential. Most students rely on university buses to get between campuses, especially during the winter.

Here are the areas where most University of Michigan students actually look for off-campus housing.
South University
If you ask most students where they ideally want to live near Michigan, the answer is usually South University.
South U is the center of student life in Ann Arbor. The area sits just steps from the Diag and Central Campus, making it one of the most walkable and convenient locations for students. Between restaurants, cafés, study spots and nightlife, almost everything students need is within walking distance.
This area is also heavily connected to Michigan’s social scene. Greek life, football weekends and student events all spill into South University throughout the year. On any given afternoon, you’ll see students grabbing coffee, heading to class or meeting friends outside popular spots like Good Time Charley’s, Joe’s Pizza and Brown Jug.
Because of its location, South U is home to many of the newest student apartment communities in Ann Arbor, including Rambler Ann Arbor, Vic Village North, Vic Village South, Landmark Ann Arbor, Verve Ann Arbor and Six11. These high-rise communities offer amenities students increasingly prioritize, including rooftop lounges, fitness centers, study spaces and fully furnished units.
The biggest advantage of South University is simple: you can walk almost everywhere. Many students rarely need to drive once they live in this area.
The tradeoff is that South U tends to be one of the busiest and loudest parts of Ann Arbor. Weekends and game days can get crowded, but for many UMich students, that energy is exactly why they want to live there.
Church Street & Greenwood Avenue
For students who still want to stay close to campus but prefer a slightly quieter atmosphere, the Church Street and Greenwood Avenue area is one of the most popular options.
Instead of mostly high-rise apartments, you’ll find a mix of student houses, smaller apartment buildings and rentals shared between friend groups. Many upperclassmen move into this area after freshman or sophomore year because it offers a little more space while still being close to Central Campus.
The location keeps students near South U without placing them directly in the middle of the busiest streets. You are still within walking distance of classes, restaurants and nightlife, but the atmosphere feels more residential once you get onto the side streets.
This area is also known for the tailgates, frat parties and house parties during the school year, especially on football weekends. For many upperclassmen, Church Street and Greenwood Avenue offer the classic Michigan social experience while still being close to Central Campus and the IM Building.
For many students, Church and Greenwood represent the “traditional” off-campus Michigan experience: living in a house with friends, walking to class and spending weekends around Central Campus.

Downtown Ann Arbor
Downtown Ann Arbor offers a different style of student living compared to South U and Central Campus.
